Let’s Eat Cake!

Two local bakers put the icing on your celebration

At Prairie Parent, we believe every celebration calls for cake. And these days, gourmet and theme cakes are everywhere, even (and most fun) at children’s birthday parties! Two local bakers have taken the cake game to a new level and are ready to help make your cake dreams come true.

How did you get into the business of baking and making cakes?   I fell in love with my nephew the moment he was born. For his first birthday I wanted to create something special and memorable. I’ve always loved baking, so on a whim I made him a decorated cake. I enjoyed creating it just as much as I enjoyed watching him destroy it so I started taking cake-decorating classes. My friends and co-workers were the recipients of some very ugly cakes at the beginning. In 2010, I decided to pursue a career in baking and began taking classes in business and culinary arts. In 2012 I was one of 15 students accepted into the Pastry and Baking program at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. I created The Cake Life and started accepting orders from friends and family. In 2014, my husband and I moved to my hometown of Gladstone to be closer to my family.  I found a licensed, commercial kitchen to rent and started my business again here.

At Prairie Parent, we’re all about kids. What is your favorite part about making cakes or desserts to help celebrate a child’s birthday or special event?
I fondly remember my dad and grandma making cakes for my birthdays when I was little. Eating cake was my favorite part of the party! Life is all about creating memories and I think a special cake can do that. I love seeing the kids’ reactions when their cake is revealed. They know it was created just for them. Hopefully, later in life, their cake will bring back happy memories of their childhood.

What’s been the most challenging baking project you’ve ever taken on?
My sister’s wedding cake. It had a hidden scene carved out of the back of the cake.  Worrying about it being stable and making it beautiful for her was a challenge. Also, trying to help her plan her big day and get her cake done was insane, I don’t recommend trying to make a wedding cake and being in the wedding!

Do you have a cake you’re most proud of?
In 2013, I entered an online cake competition called Threadcakes. I created a steampunk owl based off of a t-shirt design. It was my first 3D cake and had so many little details but I loved it. It took about 30 hours to complete. I won second place and was up against some amazing cake artists.

What’s your favorite flavor?

Banana cake with cream cheese!

If I want to place and order with you, what does the process look like? How long should I plan in advance?

We only accept two to three cake orders per week, but we can reserve dates six months in advance with a deposit. Since we also create wedding cakes, some dates book up early.  We can recreate an existing design you’ve fallen in love with or collaborate to create a totally unique design. Prices start at $150 for a 22 serving cake, including delivery to Dickinson and your choice of our scratch baked cake and buttercream flavors. We accept cash, check and card and everything can be done online. Email is best, erin@thecakelife.com.

Western North Dakota is pretty rural. What are your delivery options?
We can deliver outside of Dickinson for $1 per mile. We’ve traveled as far as Jamestown with cakes.

How did you get into the business of baking and making cakes?

While looking for someone in the area to make a cake for my son’s birthday I was unable to find anyone to make the cake I wanted, so I decided to try making one myself.

At Prairie Parent, we’re all about kids. What is your favorite part about making cakes or desserts to help celebrate a child’s birthday or special event?

I love it when I get photos and videos of their faces when they see the cake.

Why do you think it’s so important for parents to commemorate these special occasions with cake?

I love how personal a cake can be to someone!  The cake always makes a great centerpiece and great memories!

What’s been the most challenging baking project you’ve ever taken on?

It would have to be the Chevy pickup cake. It was very difficult to keep the cake together and was very time consuming, but in the end turned out really cute and made someone so happy!

Do you have a cake you’re most proud of?

Yes the first cake I made is the one I’m most proud of because of how great it turned out and started my journey as a cake decorator.

What’s your favorite flavor?
My favorite flavor is almond.

What other desserts or services does your business offer?
I also offer cookies, Carmel and cinnamon rolls, cake pops, I will try anything.

If I want to place and order with you, what does the process look like? How long should I plan in advance?
Orders should be placed about three weeks in advance and can be made by messaging me on my Facebook page or by calling me at 701-568-2266.

Western North Dakota is pretty rural. What are your delivery options?
I will no longer be able to deliver because I will be opening a cake shop/baker in Ray Mall, so I will have to be there to run it. I have had people order cakes from Minot, Bismarck, Crosby, Watford City, Power’s Lake, New Town and one even hitched a ride to Grand Forks. You just have to make arrangements to get it to you!
