Kids talk about the importance of ART

Watford City’s Long X Arts Foundation provides after school art programming for kids. This session they are learning to draw through a variety of techniques. Mrs. Mary McCullough led them through an exercise where they practiced copying images using a grid system.  After they were done with their project, we talked to them about why they think kids need art in their lives.

Kimberly McLinden, 10 – 4th Grade, Alexander Elementary School
“I took this class because I love to draw. I’m better than my mom and dad. My favorite thing to draw is anything that pops into my head,” said Kimberly. She believes it’s important for kids to have art in their lives “So they can get better and they have something to do when they get older so they’re not board all the time.”

Jacob Adams, 11 – 5th Grade, Johnsons Corners Christian Academy
Jacob was interested in taking an art class because he liked the idea of learning how to draw and he likes to be creative. His favorite things to draw are people and animals. He thinks art is important because “It helps people be creative and have an imagination. If something’s going hard in your life, you can draw.”

Lola Brdesen, 9 – 4th Grade, Watford City Intermediate School
Lola loves drawing and says she’s been drawing since she was two or three. She loves to draw horses, dogs and tigers. According to Lola, art is important for kids because “It gives them time to spend by themselves. And when they grow up and want to be an artist, they can draw.”

Addy Fish, 9 – 4th Grad, Watford City Intermediate School
Addy took the drawing class because when she grows up she might want to be an artist. Her favorite things to draw are designs and flowers. Art is important for kids because “If they want to grow up to be an artist they can practice in coloring books and they can learn about art and think it’s fun.”

Brylee Fish, 9 – 2nd Grade, Watford City Elementary School
Brylee wants to be a better drawer. Her favorite thing to draw is plants and flowers. Art is important for kids “So they can know how to draw. A lot of people can be artists.”

MaKayla Klamm, 8 – 2nd Grade, Johnsons Corners Christian Academy
MaKayla took the drawing class because she loves drawing. Her favorite things to draw are her family and Christmas. Art is important for kids “So they can earn how to color, draw and have fun in their life.”

Cooper George, 8 – 2nd Grade, Watford City Elementary School
“Ever since I was born I’ve been looking at drawings and I liked it,” said Cooper. “When I was three I started to draw and kept drawing and now I’m a really good artist.” Cooper likes to draw elephant heads and giraffes. About the importance of art to kids Cooper said, “Some kids need to learn how to hold pencils and write better for paperwork so their bosses can read it.”

Chloe Gronos, 11 – 6th Grade, Watford City Intermediate School
Chloe is taking drawing classes to get inspired to do her own drawings. She likes to draw plant sand animals. “Art teachers you how to picture things and use your imagination to draw it from memory. It helps you learn better.”

Darby Moberg 9 – 4th Grade, Watford City Intermediate School
Darby is taking drawing classes to help her be a better at arts and crafts. She likes to draw elephants, turtles and puppies on hearts. Art is important to kids “So they can get older and to into nature and draw and they won’t be bored.”

Riley Robinson, 8 – 3rd Grade, Watford City Elementary School
“I like drawing a lot,” said Riley. She likes drawing backgrounds and pictures and thinks art is important for kids so they can learn how to draw.

Thayden Arnold, 10 – 4th Grade, Watford City Intermediate School
Thayden is taking drawing classes so he can learn to sketch and draw and because it’s fun. He likes drawing cars and trucks. Art is important for kids “So they have something to do when they’re lonely. When they don’t feel well they can pick up a piece of paper and draw.”

Emma Arnold, 8 – 3rd Grade, Watford City Elementary School
Emma thought taking a drawing class would be fun. She likes to draw pigs. She thinks art is important for kids because “They might like to draw and want to do it when they get older.”
