Group Prenatal Care Model Now Offered in Dickinson

Dickinson first ND location to offer group prenatal care model

In association with CHI St. Alexius Health in Dickinson, Dr. Thomas Arnold, Dr. William Matt Lowe II, and Mary Jo Wicks, FNP-BC, are happy to announce the beginning of CenteringPregnancy® in Dickinson. CenteringPregnancy is “prenatal care that includes traditional health checkup with additional time and attention in a group setting.”

CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson is the first location in North Dakota to offer the option of Centering to its prenatal patients. CenteringPregnancy is a nationally proven model of prenatal care that results in high rates of patient satisfaction and lowered rates of pre-term births.

CenteringPregnancy involves group prenatal care sessions and allows patients and healthcare providers to get to know each other better, provide additional education for pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, and for patients to get to know each other and develop new friendships. This is especially important if patients are new to the area and do not have many friends or acquaintances.

Centering group sessions are two hours in length and the participants are all due around the same time. This allows for discussion of pregnancy-related events that will be common to the entire group.

The first sessions begin at about 12-16 weeks gestation, and the same group of mothers meet every month until closer to term, when the meetings will occur every 2 weeks. These group sessions will involve issues that are important to learn about during pregnancy, such as:

  • Why we do prenatal testing
  • What happens to the body and what changes occur during pregnancy
  • Common discomforts
  • Discussing mental relaxation and breastfeeding the baby
  • Fetal brain development
  • Preterm labor
  • Labor and delivery concerns
  • The birthing experience
  • The newborn’s first days and planning pediatric care
  • Pregnancy to parenting transition
  • Newborn safety
  • Newborn care, growth, and development

CenteringPregnancy offers the opportunity for the patients to visit with their healthcare providers for an extended period of time and allows for more opportunity to ask questions and to learn about their pregnancy and delivery and newborn care.

We are excited to offer this new addition to routine prenatal care.
